Spotlight on: Ginger

The potential health benefits of ginger are numerous, from supporting digestion and alleviating nausea, to immune system and brain health.

These benefits mainly stem from gingerol - the bioactive compound in ginger which is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial substance.

Benefits of antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that protect the body from stress, inflammation, and damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells and DNA. This damage can contribute to ageing and some diseases.

Antioxidants are particularly important in preconception, because they protect the ovum and sperm, and enhance the production of testosterone.

Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy

In pregnancy, ginger has been well studied for the treatment of nausea and vomiting, and found to reduce the severity and duration of both.

Other benefits

The anti-inflammatory nature of ginger may make it beneficial for muscle soreness and swelling in pregnancy.

There is also some evidence that ginger helps regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, which may be beneficial if you develop gestational diabetes.

How much ginger should you have?

It is possible to have adverse effects, including heartburn, from too much ginger, but up to 1g per day of root powder equivalent has been found to be safe in pregnancy.

You’ll find ginger in our Organic Chicken Bone Broth, Chicken Rice with Egg, Chicken Ginger Soup, and Miso Shiitake Broth.
